- Program Description:
- The College Residential Institute is a month-long program specifically designed for 9th grade students from the Kauffman Scholars program in Kansas City and the KIPP Delta College Preparatory School in Helena, Arkansas. The program is a mixture of fun activities, academic engagement, and authentic campus life at the University of Arkansas. The office of Pre-College Programs seeks approximately 9 energetic student leaders to live and work with College Residential Institute attendees as Youth Leaders. As role models and enforcers of program policy, Youth Leaders will work as a team to maintain a safe living and learning environment in which to guide and engage with student participants.
- Time commitment:
- June 30, 2008 -- August 1, 2008 (M-F)
- Includes one week of training
- Compensation: $1600 plus room & board.
Restrictions
- These are resident positions. You will live on campus with the students.
- Youth Leaders cannot be enrolled in summer classes during employment period.
- No outside employment is permitted.
Qualifications
Applicants must have successfully completed at least 50 hours of college credit by June 2008, be in good academic
standing, have a minimum GPA of 2.5, possess leadership experience & ability, and have residential
living experience. Preferred: Experience
facilitating student groups and residential life supervisory experience.

Expectation & Responsibilities
The live-in summer residential staff serves as role models, mentors,
educators, and enforcers of program policies to student participants.
It is crucial for the staff to function effectively as a team in creating
a living/learning environment through support of academics and facilitation
of educational, cultural, personal development, and social activities
for program participants.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, supervising youth in a consistent, equitable manner in a variety of structured and unstructured environments; facilitating a small on-going mentor group; attending all meals and student outings; completing documentation and reports as assigned; displaying a high level of motivation; maintaining a positive attitude; and functioning well in a structured, fast pace environment; work effectively with and display sensitivity toward a wide range of ethnic, socioeconomic, cultural and life-style differences among staff and student participants.
These positions require an abundant amount of time, energy, and motivation.
Due to the high demand of the positions, residential staff cannot be enrolled
in summer classes during their employment period. Successful applicants
must possess the willingness to become a part of the lives of student
participants while challenging them to question, learn, and grow. Our
purpose is to assist in empowering all participants to achieve their full
potential.
Note: To help ensure the safety of the participants of Pre-College Programs, final appointment is contingent upon successful state and federal background checks.
