Frequently Asked Questions

How can I become a GTScholar?
To become a GTScholar, students must be nominated by an educator, whether that is a teacher, counselor, or administrator.


What makes a student eligible for nomination to the GTScholars program?
Students that have shown evidence of high academic ability and/or achievement based on the GTScholars eligibility criteria. Students must be in grades 6-12 and meet a minimum of two (2) of the following criteria to be considered for the GTScholars program.

  • Scored in the 90th percentile or above on one or more of the major content areas or ability sections of a nationally-normed standardized test (i.e. ITBS or SAT9)
  • Identified as gifted and/or have participated in a school gifted program
  • Past or current participant in a talent identification program such as Duke University’s TIP, Southern Methodist University Talented and Gifted Program (TAG), The Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CYT), etc.
  • National Honor Society member
  • 3.5 grade point average or above in all Pre-AP, AP and/or honors coursework


Can students who attend private schools or are home-schooled be nominated?
Yes, private school and home-schooled students are eligible for the GTScholars program. Home-schooled students will need to contact the GTScholars office for specific instructions concerning application.


Is there a nomination or membership fee?
There is no cost involved in the nomination process but if a student chooses to participate in this prestigious program, a $25 lifetime membership fee will be required to establish and maintain full membership benefits.


What are some of the privileges GT Scholars enjoy?
In addition to being recognized as one of the top students in their state, students will receive an invitation to attend the Gifted & Talented Scholars Convocation and Scholars Saturdays. Membership privileges also include a close association with the University's nationally renowned Honors College, special mailings, semi-annual newsletter, membership card, and a certificate of distinction. In addition, those completing the seventh, eighth or ninth grade have the unique opportunity to apply for acceptance to the Summer Institute for Gifted & Talented Scholars.


Do I have to be a GT Scholar in order to attend the Summer Institute?
No. Any student completing the seventh, eighth or ninth grade with a demonstrated level of high academic ability is eligible to apply. However, GTScholars who meet the application requirements for the Summer Institute will be given special priority during the selection process.
